Due to a funny turn of events the world misses 1990ies. Look, recently all cinematic genres tune to a nostalgic trend: within a year we have seen Ready Player One, Mid90s and now Captain Marvel. However putting those not quite faraway times on screen the way they`d look themselves is an art multiplied by responsibility and vision of a cameraman, plus close attention to details and, which is most important, personal involvement and colorful memories. In fact I have to admit that as the post-production campaign started I had no intention to see the film, with all due respect to Marvel Studios and comic book universe. It seemed too shoal even for its type, but it is funny that later my mind was changed polarly, not by the warm Copenhagen night and even not by the Empire Cinema, but mainly by the brilliant screenplay and PR decision of making a ginger cat one of the key characters. Cats, aren`t they the clue to global supremacy?
Many words of appreciation and excitement were said about A Star Is Born reboot: another fairytale that got eight Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Leading Actor & Actress, Cinematography etc., but won just Best Original Song. Despite of critics` warm welcome I could ever hardly agree that Bradley Cooper`s directing debut was powerful enough to stand competition with best examples of Oscar-level excellence. Freshly screened Bohemian Rhapsody has already fairly set the Thames on fire at the Golden Globes ceremony by gaining the key awards for Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama. There is not the less prestigious BAFTA ahead, and then comes the Oscars with five nominations – a half less that The Favourite earned, however, no one doubts that Bohemian Rhapsody will take the floor at the Academy Awards ceremony. Some may think that the award season of 2019 will be remarkable for its musical trend: along with Bohemian Rhapsody critics put their stakes on Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga`s project A Star Is Born. But I will take a risk and propose the other vision of award trends. Look, it might be a coincidence but while crusading in pursuit of globes, BAFTAs and golden guys the first leading film must be somehow a fairytale (remember The Shape of Water, the last year winner), as the other one conversely realistic. And what can be more realistic than a biopic? This genre has its own recipe of success, and no one knows it better than Anthony McCarten.
Historical drama Mary Queen of Scots has hit the screens in late 2018, having both lead parts portrayed by Oscar nominees Margot Robbie (Elizabeth I) and Saoirse Ronan (Mary Stuart), but surprisingly none of them despite of brilliant performance were nominated this year. Anyway, the Academy saved two well-deserved nominations for the film: Costume Design and Makeup & Hairstyling. The film relates the youth years of two strong women who tried to overpower the gender politics and the politics itself in the age of men`s rule and backward mentality.

Fantastically attractive virtual worlds, bare-boned devastated reality, adventures and endless horizon for imagination – all this can be easily packed inside a good book. That is why I was a bit suspicious about screen adaptation of Ernest Cline`s Ready Player One. The book filled with sultry links to 1980ies` pop culture up to full capacity seemed unreal not only due to its plotline, but also in terms of screening-ability, let`s put it this way. A reader is not limited in his fantasy, each person interprets the author`s style and context in a unique way, while the film sets the exact visual frame and shapes its own reality. Luckily it was Steven Spielberg to take the helm, and, with a dream team of brilliant cast and his talent to ignite the screen with any fairytale he managed to create the film that deserves all highest rankings.
