90th Oscar: The Winner Shapes It All

Another Academy Award season is over. The winner unveiled: Guillermo Del Toro`s nets double with The Shape Of Water. The film has received 13 nominations with 4 won, including Best Picture and Directing. Another Academy fave, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, has brought the award to Frances McDormand as Leading Actress and Sam Rockwell as Supporting Actor. It was quite a battle: the film has two Supporting Actor noms, for Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell, but the striking performance in Officer Dixon`s role made Sam win. Another well-deserved, long-awaited and highly appreciated winning nomination was Best Actor that went to Gary Oldman for his brilliant, smart and witty Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. All listed above were more or less predictable, but what surprises was Oscar-2018 hiding, and who turned out to be a loser this time – let`s have a quick look.

During the pre-Oscar race there were three more favourites on the high wave as well: Dunkirk (8 noms), Call Me By Your Name (4 noms) and Get Out (4 noms). Critics were confident about Christopher Nolan`s success, the audience accepted the film positively, despite that it was the director`s first attempt to dive into historical matters. But the Academy has granted Dunkirk with only three awards (Film Editing, Sound Mixing and Sound Editing), regardless of large-scale location shooting, fairly made cinematography (this nom went to Blade Runner 2049) and breathtaking and pathetic score by Hans Zimmer (the Original Score nom went to Alexandre Desplat for The Shape Of Water). CMBYN and Get Out have shared the pedestal in screenplay noms, taking Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay correspondingly. Anyway, they made good statistics by winning 1 of 4 nominations each.

But there are also those who`s suddenly fallen overboard. Lady Bird by Greta Gerwig: first bird to fly gets all the arrows, as Liam Gallagher sings. Maybe too young, too early, too light-weighted plot for Oscar, who knows, anyway she`s made an entrance in cinematic world with her directing debut and progressive views that led her to 4 noms, including Best Picture and Directing. Another outsider is Star Wars: The Last Jedi, there was a big mess about who`s best at Visual EffectsEpisode VIII or Blade Runner 2049, and finally, despite all of imaginary talent of Rian Johnson, this nom went to Blade Runner. The battle for Original Score by the classic of the Galaxy Far Far Away John Williams was lost to The Shape Of Water. And the last, but not the least in the disappointment list of 90th Oscar is the defeat of The Post – the masterpiece of Steven Spielberg, revealing the breathtaking story of The Washington Post publication on the Pentagon`s Vietnam secret files, starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, missed both Best Picture and Leading Actress noms.

Anything goes, 90th Oscar became a part of cinematic history, filmmaking and acting experience, opening the path to the next Academy Awards season. Follow our reviews and let`s see the faves of 2019!
